Cats like these are ones that we simply cannot resist befriending. Because it is so, so clear that they want love, that they want a friend, that they want to be spoiled. They are just afraid. They don't know how to ask for what they want. They don't know how to allow themselves to be vulnerable. And we… we try and try and try to make them feel safe and comfortable, and sometimes, like in times like these, it takes a long time but it works.

If you want our purrfesional opinion, as people who follow stories about cats similar to this one every once in a while, it is just a matter of time. The first major step has been taken - he has let you approach enough to touch him. We cannot stress how big this is. We don't think that it will be long now before you are consistently petting him and getting him into that carrier and over to the vet. And then right onto your couch, which he will make into his new home.

Gaining a stray cat's trust is not an easy thing to do. Over and over again, you will hear stories about friendly stray cats running up to people and adopting them out of nowhere. But that is not the norm, not at all. The cats that do that are cats who are ready. They have decided that they want to be adopted, and they are on a mission to do that. Most stray cats are not quite there, if they ever will be, and gaining their trust takes work, time and real effort.
Now, some people are willing to put that time and effort into getting a stray cat to love them, but that is a rare thing too. Because sure, sometimes, it might take you a couple of days or a couple of weeks to get close enough to the stray to pet it. But other times, with cats who are more skittish, it might take years. It took this person a whole four years to have the stray cat allow a single petting session. And although some people might say that the payoff is not enough for that level of effort, we disagree. The payoff is amazing. We can be millions that the feeling this person got while petting Chuggs for the first time was worth every single second.
